Job Title: Prospect Researcher & Data Management Analyst

Job Summary: The Office of University Advancement manages the fundraising efforts on behalf of the California State University Maritime Academy (Cal Maritime), which includes soliciting individuals, corporations, foundations and professional associations for both operational and capital campaign needs. Working under the general supervision of the Senior Director of Development, this position is responsible for prospect research, proactive prospecting, prospect management, and reporting in relation to the general fundraising initiatives at Cal Maritime. This position makes decisions regarding prospect ability to make a gift to the university, utilizing training and judgment, which impacts the bottom line success of the university's fundraising programs. S/he provides prospect background information to top management, including the president's events and meetings; and provides critical information that informs fundraising strategy and success. The position will build, evaluate, maintain and rate a qualified pool of prospects using wealth screening data and other available tools; provide analysis of the comprehensive research program, including identification and/or strategic research and analysis of top-tier donor prospects, corporations, foundation and key volunteers in the support of University Advancement. The position works with staff and managers, as well as upper management, where information provided and judgment made by the incumbent have an impact on fundraising success on campus. The position serves as a campus contact and resource for information regarding major donors and prospects, and participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of program policies and procedures necessary for the identification, evaluation and tracking of major gift prospects and donors. The incumbent will work closely with the Major Gift Officer and Director of Annual Giving to identify the most appropriate assignment for major gift prospects and to develop cultivation strategies, while utilizing prospect management skills to develop successful cultivation and solicitation strategies that span several areas within the University.

Job Requirements: A bachelor's degree in a related field and/or equivalent training and work experience. Experience in prospect research, development, fundraising, market research, and/or relevant experience. Demonstrated advanced skills in planning, identifying, and cultivating prospective donors for present and future gifts. Demonstrated knowledge of biographical and financial reference sources and ability to gather information effectively from a variety of resources. Ability to compile, write, and present reports related to prospect research findings.  Knowledge of basic methods and procedures for research and statistical analysis and the ability to apply them. Demonstrated knowledge of corporate and individual solicitation methods - identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with donors, faculty, co-workers, students and the public utilizing discretion and professionalism.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:Advanced knowledge of Raiser's Edge fundraising software. Knowledge of prospect management systems and the moves management of donors. Knowledge of the maritime and related industries will be considered a strong asset. Experience in a higher education or similar advancement setting. Fundraising experience in higher education. Understanding of and competency with the Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement (APRA) Advanced Skill Sets. Knowledge of WealthEngine, I-Wave, Guidestar, Dataquick, Dun & Bradstreet, Lexis Nexis Development Professional and other electronic resources.
