Job Description

DUTIES: Direct, maintain, and supervise a comprehensive, accurate, and timely development research system to support the University's fund-raising objectives; hire, train, and supervise staff as needed; prepare and oversee budget; assess and determine resources necessary to maximize department's prospect identification efforts, including external databases and other vendor products; organize and prioritize all work of the department; manage the collection of information and preparation of profiles to provide timely research on individuals and corporations from an increasingly diverse body of resources; evaluate and analyze researched information as to prospect identification, financial capability, associations, and connection to the University; maintain scrupulous attention to matters of discretion and confidentiality; supervise the development tracking system and the design and implementation of all reports generated by this system; provide research assistance to the Corporate and Foundation Relations Department; provide proactive research of new prospects as well as augmenting knowledge of existing donors by reading daily newspapers, periodicals, business journals, and business magazines; attend fund-raising committee meetings where prospect strategy is the focus; maintain membership in APRA (Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement) and CARA (Southern California's Chapter to APRA) and attend conferences related to prospect research; perform other related duties as assigned.  

   

Skills/Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS: Bachelor's degree; three to five years of experience in prospect research management in the nonprofit sector, preferably in higher education; significant directly related work experience may be considered in lieu of educational requirement; ability to be proactive in providing prospect/suspect information to the development team; three years of supervisory experience; ability to interact with executive level users; extensive Windows-based computer experience and database skills; experience working in a capital campaign is desirable; experience in rating capacity and propensity of prospects/donors; excellent analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills, including strong written and verbal skills; familiarity with financial information including proxy statement, annual reports, SEC documents and stock holding preferred; good time management and organizational skills, including the ability to set priorities and manage several projects simultaneously; strong staff management and training skills; proficient with on-line search tools, such as Raisers Edge, WealthEngine or other data mining products, Factiva, Lexis-Nexis, SEC documents, Insider-Trading resources, AlumniFinder, World Wide Web, and Foundation resources, including FC Search, Guidestar, and Big On-Line; ability to exercise critical thinking skills to determine the best use of resources for reaching goals and to support the University's mission.
