Ofelia L. Alayeto, Ph.D.

Ofelia Alayeto has over 15 years of experience in advancement research and management. She has been Manager of the Research Unit, University Development and Alumni Relations at the University of California, San Francisco, since 1999. Previously she was Associate Director of Research for a national environmental organization.

Dr. Alayeto has been a member of the board of directors at CARA and served in other positions. She has been a frequent conference speaker for CARA and APRA, and other fundraising organizations such as CASE.

She was a part-time lecturer at the University of San Francisco for 14 years, teaching writing and communications at the graduate and undergraduate levels. She is the author of a scholarly book and many articles in her field.

Ofelia Alayeto was born in Havana, Cuba, where she lived until the age of 15. She holds a BA in Italian and French, and a PhD in Comparative Literature, all from City University of New York.

Joseph Boeke

Joseph Boeke is the Director of Development Operations at the California Institute of Technoloy in Pasadena, California. Prior to joining Caltech, Mr. Boeke served as the Director of Advancement and Information Services at Bucknell University, the Associate Vice President for Advancement Operations at Marquette University and as the Director of Development at WITF, Inc. In 1993 Mr. Boeke created PRSPCT-L, the first dedicated internet resource for the prospect research profession. Since that time, PRSPCT-L has become a research tool in itself as subscribers seek solutions and share information among its 3,000+ members. He has conducted numerous seminars on prospect research, database management, development and using the internet for APRA, NSFRE and CASE. Joe was also honored with the Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement's 2000 Service Award. Previously, he was involved in development and research at his alma mater, the University of California, Irvine and Harvard University.

Sue Brewsaugh

Sue is a Library & Learning Center Manager for the Boeing Company. She has watched the world of information searching change from tedious perusal of print indexes and library card catalogs, to quick and expensive use of commercially available databases such as Dialog and Lexis-Nexis to the new world of quick and magic but sometimes questionable, and often incomplete internet searching. She has been an adjunct faculty member of the San Jose State School of Library and Information Science for fifteen years. She has spoken at SLA, LACASIS, and SCOUG meetings. She’s looking forward to exploring the world of search with you.

Patrice Curtis

Patrice Curtis is Managing Director of Curtis Research Group Intl. LLC (CRG), a firm specializing in marketing research and analysis for companies seeking to deepen understanding of their customers, competitors, and industry to grow revenue. She founded her independent research practice in 2002.

Patrice works with small to mid-size companies directly and as part of a team providing services to Fortune 50 companies. Her annualized research projects help companies monitor competitors and industry developments. Her short-term, project-specific research projects have included helping small businesses create strategic direction, expand revenue for existing products, and launch new consumer products. In addition, Patrice works with non-profits to launch entrepreneurial efforts, as well as locating funding for U.S.-based and international projects.

A former Presidential Management Intern, Ms. Curtis holds a Master's degree from the University of Pittsburgh and completed post-graduate coursework at Oxford University in anthropology and humanitarian aid. She undertook field research in Kenya, Croatia, and Bosnia-Hercegovina. While serving as a foreign affairs analyst for the Library of Congress, she was responsible for research and analysis of foreign policy issues of developing countries for congressional members. Prior to her service with the Library, Ms. Curtis worked for U.S.A.I.D. (Department of State) in Washington DC and overseas.

In addition to her professional activities, Ms. Curtis has also been a Board Member for several non-profits; she is currently on the Board of the Golden Gate chapter of the United Cerebral Palsy and the Dorothy Russell Curtis scholarship fund. She is the author of numerous research reports, briefs and memoranda for U.S. Congress, as well as articles on social media and Podcast advertising. She is also the editor of Speaking Opportunities Directory for the San Francisco Bay Area.

Anastasia Darwish

Anastasia Darwish is Manager of Research and Operations at Orange County United Way. In her role, she supervises a team of two Investor Relations Assistants and leads the research strategy and activities for one of the largest health and human services nonprofits in Orange County. Anastasia came to Orange County United Way in 2004 as a part of the organization’s Community Resource Development team. Since then, she has grown with the organization to become Investor Relations Manager and most recently, Manager of Research and Operations. During her tenure, Anastasia has transformed the research shop from reactive profile generation to a proactive partner in identifying, developing and implementing new business development strategies. In addition to prospect research, her area of expertise includes market research, designing organizational databases, developing policies and procedures, and conducting training sessions for staff and volunteers.

Aimee Fitzgerald

With more than a decade of research experience, Aimee Fitzgerald brings the perspective of the librarian to the fundraising world.

Aimee has an extensive background in a number of industries, including entertainment, advertising, management consulting and higher education. She began her career as a member of the production team for NBC Entertainment, and worked with such stellar producers as Bob Regan, Carla Singer and Marion Rees. Leaving the fast-paced world of production, Aimee became the sales and customer service manager for a small database company, specializing in entertainment credits. A short-lived product, Aimee was soon hired to manage the information center for Grey Advertising. This began Aimee's life-long love of research.

After pursuing an MLIS (Master of Library and Information Science), Aimee worked as an information specialist at the Boston Consulting Group and as a research associate at Marshall-Plumb Research. Relocating to rural Pennsylvania afforded Aimee the opportunity to work in public libraries, where she was the Public Library System Administrator for Greene County. It was in this role that Aimee learned about the field of fundraising, having to raise matching funds for a prestigious Federal grant.

Returning to her native Southern California, Aimee was hired as a research analyst at the University of Southern California. She has since worked as the Director of Prospect Research at Loyola Marymount University and Pepperdine University, gaining campaign experience, as well as conducting screenings and assisting in database conversions. She also established prospect management systems from scratch, as well as work around systems designed to interface with legacy databases.

A frequent speaker and presenter, Aimee has presented sessions at the Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement (APRA) International Conference, California Advancement Researchers Assoiciation (CARA) seminar days, and the Special Library Association (SLA) seminar days.

Aimee is a member of APRA, CARA and the Association of Independent Information Professionals (AIIP).

Barbara Fullerton

I have been a law librarian for over 15 years with experience in corporate and law libraries. I have a bachelor's in mass communications, a paralegal certificate, and a M.L.I.S. from Emporia State University in Kansas. I've been in Dallas for 5 years where I was Director of Library Services for Locke Liddell & Sapp law firm and now work for 10-K Wizard as Manager of Librarian Relations. Over the past decade I have been involved in professional associations and an active member in AALL, SLA and other regional librarian chapters. I have spoken at many events including AALL annual meetings, SLA regional meetings, Internet Librarian, Texas Library Association, Computers in Libraries, SCIP, regional paralegal associations, and other various meetings. Speaking topics include gadgets, privacy issues, data mining, cybertheft, Gumshoe Librarian, etc.

Nancy Gregovich Bowers

Nancy Gregovich Bowers is a national industry expert in the HIPAA Privacy Rules pertaining to the use of protected health information in healthcare fundraising. Nancy serves as the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP) designated resource on HIPAA and has presented at more than a dozen AHP, APRA, and CARA national and international conferences attended by hundreds of fund developers. Her materials are frequently used at AHP’s Institute for Healthcare Philanthropy at Madison, she is a contributing author to the Advisory Board’s piece Elevating Philanthropy: Exceptional Practice in Major-Donor Fundraising and she has served numerous individual HIPAA clients across the U.S.

With more than ten years experience in project management and research and analysis, she is a consultant specializing in strategic planning and management of fund development programs. Nancy has experience as a senior level development officer, has conducted multiple capital campaign studies, and has provided general and strategic client fund development counsel.

While Director of Development at St. Luke’s Hospital Foundation, a Sutter-affiliated hospital in San Francisco, Nancy lead all aspects of the fund development program which exceeded its most recent annual goal by 43%. Prior to that, she served as the Foundation Compliance Officer at California Pacific Medical Center, also a Sutter-affiliated hospital located in San Francisco. Nancy's background also includes six years of medical malpractice investigation for a Northern California medical malpractice insurance company, as well as two years in Washington, D.C. where she served as staff to the U.S. Senate Judiciary's Subcommittee on Technology and Law, focusing on issues related to privacy.

Jerry Henberger

Jerry Henberger is a certified business appraiser, a turn around specialist and a licensed real estate broker. Mr. Henberger’s past accomplishments include owning several multimillion dollar businesses, a wholesale technology distributor, a systems integration company, an industrial software and computer products dealership and a mergers and acquisitions firm. He is currently working in the non profit world as the Director of Development for Scripps Health Foundation. His exposure to the business markets include valuing and selling privately held businesses ranging from manufacturing companies, distribution companies, service businesses, gourmet food companies, franchises, restaurants, retail stores, wineries, golf courses, technology companies, internet based businesses and interactive agencies.

Mr. Henberger has authored and contributed to articles for Microsoft publications and the following magazines: Control Engineering, Aviation Week, Inc. and Forbes Small Business Journal. His public speaking engagements include being the host speaker for the Fourth Annual Lessons in Leadership Series in Los Angeles. Other hosts at the event included: Ken Blanchard, Robert Cooper, Steven Covey, Tom Peters and Margaret Wheatley. Mr. Henberger has been interviewed for Sky Radio regarding the market on valuing, buying and selling small businesses.

Amelia Kassel

Amelia Kassel is President and owner of MarketingBase, a research firm specializing in company, industry, and competitive and market intelligence since 1982. Amelia holds a Masters Degree in Library Science (1971, UCLA) and combines expertise in Internet research and fee-based databases with knowledge of business and marketing strategies. Amelia taught at the graduate level for 15 years at the University of California Berkeley Extension, four years as adjunct faculty at San Jose State University School of Library and Information Science (1992-1996), and currently teaches distance education at San Jose State with courses in Online Searching, Advanced Online Searching, New and Alternative Careers For Librarians and Information Professionals, and Competitive Intelligence Research. This past summer she taught a distance education course in Information Entrepreneurship for the University of Tennessee School of Information Science.

As a recognized author and international speaker, she conducts seminars for associations and conferences and gives workshops on-site for companies and organizations. Her successful Mentor Program geared to training information research business owners in how to successfully build and operate an information business is a one-on-one program that’s email based. The program focus is twofold:

David M. Lawson

David Lawson is Vice President, Market Strategy, for Kintera. He brings more than 30 years of experience in the art of finding and profiling America s wealthy. In 1997, he founded Prospect Information Network (P!N) to provide prospect identification services and software to the nonprofit community. P!N was acquired by Kintera in 2004. David began his fundraising career in the late 1970s as editor of The Foundation 500. In the 1980s he founded The Information Prospector, a company that grew to employ more than 30 researchers and writers producing 300 in-depth profiles monthly. As a senior consultant at CDA/Investnet (now Thomson Financial), David created the company’s securities and real estate MATCH products and designed its FACT$ Viewer database. He is a contributing author, Major Donors: Finding big gifts in your database and online. David is a Member of APRA, an ePMT, CASE Steuben Apple Award recipient and co-founder of the WOW! Institute, a training organization for fundraisers and philanthropists.

Claire Logue

Claire Logue joined WealthEngine in September 2004 after more than a decade working with nonprofit organizations. Prior to WealthEngine.com, she was the Director of Prospect Research at Pepperdine University in California. While there, she was active in the university’s capital campaign, helping develop and implement data screening to identify prospects. She also worked at the American Red Cross, National Headquarters in Washington, DC, as a fundraiser for international disasters. While there, she raised over $50 million for those affected by Hurricane Mitch plus millions more for other international disasters. Earlier, she worked in prospect research at the NRA Foundation, and she managed her own research business.

Jamie Nelson

Jaime Nelson is the Director of Gift Planning at Scripps Health, a five hospital and multi-clinic healthcare system in San Diego County. Jamie has 12 years of fundraising experience, of which the past 6 years have specialized in Gift Planning. Since coming to Scripps Health, Jamie has worked with a wide variety of planned gifts in a busy office that has been bringing in $10 - $14 Million in planned gifts per year.

Jamie grew up in the Middle East, living in Beirut, Ankara, and Baghdad with Washington D.C. sandwiched in between. She received her Bachelor’s degree from BYU in Theatre and completed her C.S.P.G. (Certified Specialist in Planned Giving) from The American Institute of Philanthropic Studies at California State University Long Beach.

Michael Quevli

Michael is a 1984 BFA graduate of Stephens College, which is a private women’s college in Columbia, MO. To alleviate any rumors, Stephens hires 8 male student actors and in return they earn the BFA. After 20 years in the entertainment industry, Michael began his career in prospect research in 1996 at AIDS Project Los Angeles. He was at the Keck School of Medicine of USC for eight years and was responsible for overseeing the Development Research team, prior to joining Kintera in 2005. In addition to serving on the APRA Board, Michael was the membership chair for two for CARA, where during his tenure membership went from 165 to 300. He has served on the board of the LaurelGrove Theatre and for three terms on the Stephens College Alumnae Association Board as well as president of his class. He is deeply honored to have received the CARA Service Award in June 2004. In April 2007, he received the Stephens College Alumnae Service Award and is noted at being the first male to ever receive this award. He has been a frequent speaker for CARA, APRA and was an instructor at the College of Extended Learning at Cal State Northridge in prospect research and prospect management.

Lynn Rahn, CPA

A certified public accountant with a degree in business from CSU Fullerton, Lynn Rahn joined the University of California, Irvine’s division of University Advancement in November 2000 and is currently the interim assistant vice chancellor of resource planning and administration. She serves as the chief financial officer for the University of California, Irvine Foundation as well as the liaison to the Audit, Stewardship, and Investment and Finance Committees. Mrs. Rahn previously worked at Olive Crest Homes and Services for Abused Children where she was the chief financial officer. She also serves on the advisory board for the Crystal Cove Alliance and is the treasurer for the Lido Isle Yacht Club.

Cynthia L. Shamel

Cynthia L. Shamel founded Shamel Information Services in 1998, offering information audits, competitive intelligence, and business research to small companies and multinational corporations adding value through analysis and summary of findings. Ms. Shamel obtained her Master of Library Science degree from Indiana University in 1990. She served as a college reference librarian and taught in a library technology program before launching her research business. In 2000 she joined the Board of Directors of the Association of Independent Information Professionals (AIIP) and served as President in 2003-2004. In 2006 AIIP award her the Sue Rugge Memorial Award for mentoring. Ms. Shamel also served on the Board of the San Diego Chapter of the Special Libraries Association in 2002.

Ms. Shamel has articles published in Cyberskeptic’s Guide to Internet Research, Searcher: The Magazine for Database Professionals, Community & Junior College Libraries, and Reviews in Urology. She also edited the 450-page book called Introduction to Online Market and Industry Research, published in 2004.

She presented a case study at the Association of Independent Information Professionals Annual Conference in 2007. She has also given numerous workshops and presentations on biomedical research, marketing, and becoming an independent information professional.

Suzanne S. Szalay

Suzanne Szalay has 15 years of experience establishing and managing prospect research, identification and prospect management at two major Los Angeles hospitals, plus seven previous years working for non-profit organizations. She has a B.S. in Textiles & Clothing and a Master of Library and Information Science degree specializing in Information Systems Design.

In 2000, she joined the Childrens Hospital Los Angeles Foundation fund-raising team which was rapidly ramping up for its most aggressive ever comprehensive “Living Proof” campaign. She re-established the prospect research department, initiated a prospect tracking and management system, assisted with a database conversion and spearheaded a wealth screening implementation. The $500 million goal of the first phase was completed and exceeded in June 2006. The second phase of the campaign is currently in progress with a $250 million goal for a new six-story, 317-bed hospital with heliport. Since 2001 Suzanne has worked closely with the Childrens Hospital privacy officer to assure compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations by the Foundation staff. She currently manages a department of seven who identify research, track and manage over 4500 major donor prospects.

As a new researcher in 1992, Suzanne first met other researchers at the fledgling Southern California Researchers Association (SoCARA) where she enjoyed the camaraderie and helpfulness of the members of this small grassroots organization. She eagerly joined in, helping to write the early CARA by-laws as southern and northern California researchers joined together to organize. Later she served as a CARA Board member and was instrumental in hiring the Business Manager as CARA membership grew. Suzanne has presented on the topics of prospect research and HIPAA at various local CARA, AFP and Planned Giving Round Table meetings as well as national APRA and Millennium software conferences. Also, she served as a 1996 APRA conference track chair. Recently, Suzanne was honored to be the co-recipient of the 2006 CARA Service Award.

Amy Walling

Amy is the Director of Endowment Operations and Research at The San Diego Foundation. She has been in prospect research for over 16 years. She has served in director positions at San Diego State University and the University of Florida. She has also worked at UCSD, Children’s Hospital San Diego, and Sharp Healthcare’s Foundation. She has been as a consultant to various nonprofits. Amy has been a frequent speaker on topics such as research in small shops, information policies, and screening implementation plans. She has been a volunteer for Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement (APRA) serving on APRA’s Basic Skills Task Force, Advanced Skills Task Force, and the Relationship Management Skills Committee identifying and developing benchmark skill sets for professional prospect researchers. She has also been management track chair and hospitality chair for the annual conferences, and mentor chair for APRA. Amy has served on the board of the California Advancement Researchers Association (CARA) and as mentor chair, nominating chair, conference co-chair, and on the scholarship committee. She has served as Advancement Services track chair and hospitality chair for the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District VII conference and as a judge for CASE District VII Awards Program. Amy has a B.A. and M.A. from Old Dominion University and has done post graduate work in information science. She enjoys mentoring newcomers to the prospect research profession.

Jennifer Warwick

Jennifer Warwick, MA has focused on non-profit advancement management for more than 20 years. She has extensive knowledge of fundraising programs, systems, annual giving, major gifts, prospect research and tracking, operations, and management and leadership.

Most recently, she served as Managing Director of Advancement Solutions, a consulting firm dedicated to transforming the base of the pyramid for non-profits. In that position, she worked with organizational clients to create healthy and productive workplace cultures based on respect, kindness, and a sense of community.

Ms. Warwick previously served as assistant vice president, University Relations Services at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. She has also served as executive director of University Annual Giving and as director of development for the Marshall School of Business and the Leventhal School of Accounting, all at the University of Southern California during their $2.2 billion campaign; and as assistant director of development at Good Samaritan Hospital and corporate campaign manager and grantwriter at the Los Angeles Theatre Center.

She is a national and international speaker on advancement and nonprofit leadership and recently was awarded the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Crystal Apple Award for excellence in teaching. She frequently chairs and presents at both national and district conferences for CASE and the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP). She has also served as a speaker and faculty member for conferences sponsored by the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education, the North Carolina Baptist Foundation, the Big XII Development Conference, and others. Additionally, Ms. Warwick served on the faculty at UCLA for several years as part of their AFP-accredited Certificate in Fundraising program.

Ms. Warwick’s articles on management and leadership have appeared in numerous professional and trade publications, including CASE Currents. She has also been quoted as a women’s career expert in magazines including Entrepreneur, More, Processor, Sirens, and Vision Monthly, as well as on websites like CBSNews.com, and she was a contributing writer for Fast Company’s BlogJam in both 2005 and 2006. She is a contributing author to the women’s self-help book Inspiration to Realization II (Love Your Life Publishing, 2005), endorsed by John Gray, PhD (Men are From Mars, Women Are From Venus).

She graduated with distinction from Northwestern University and received her master’s degree in social psychology with honors from Pepperdine University, and her coaching training at the prestigious Coaches Training Institute, accredited by the International Coach Federation.

Ms. Warwick is currently at work on a book of career advice for women based on her blog, The New Charm School (www.jenniferinc.com/blog), which was just featured on Seth Godin’s blog as part of “The Z List” and as one of the top 2000 blogs. She also writes for the collective site 100bloggers (www.100bloggers.com), and is the owner and editor of BlogsByWomen (www.blogsbywomen.org). She and her husband currently live in the forest in Bastrop, Texas, a town of 7,000 just outside Austin.

    Peter M. Wasemiller

    Peter Wasemiller has been a part of higher education advancement for more than two decades where he has been involved in alumni relations, fund raising, corporate/foundation relations, grants and prospect research. He currently serves as Director of University Grants and Research for Fresno Pacific University, having organized the office to provide for both the grant-seeking/coordination and prospect research needs of the institution.

    After being introduced to prospect research in 1991 by a consultant, he attended a Bay Area Research Group (BARG) seminar day and was later asked to be a presenter at the fourth annual APRA conference in Seattle, WA. In Seattle he met members of both BARG and SoCARA (the Southern Cal Research Association), and subsequently became involved with both groups.

    Peter has been a member of CARA since its inception and served on the board for two years as Northern California Chair. He has been a presenter on prospect research and/or grant seeking for CARA, APRA, CASE, AFP and other local and regional organizations. In 2000 he was chosen as the first recipient of the CARA Service Award.

    In his “spare” time Peter teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in law at FPU, as well as courses in the business and paralegal programs at Fresno City College. He graduated from law school in 1982 and has engaged in extensive graduate coursework in leadership and organizational studies as well as conflict resolution and mediation training.

    Peter and his wife, Diana, live in Fresno, California. They have a daughter who attends FPU and a son in high school.

    Jeff Watson

    Jeff is Director of Prospect Research and Management for Pomona College, a private liberal arts college located in Claremont, California, 35 miles east of Los Angeles. Prior to joining Pomona College in 2005, he was director of prospect research for Harvey Mudd College for a number of years. In addition to performing prospect research and management, he has assisted both Harvey Mudd College and Pomona College in database conversions. He is a graduate of Pomona College.

    Jeff has been a speaker for the Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement and the Association of Fundraising Professionals (formerly the National Society of Fundraising Executives). A member of CARA since its founding, he has participated in (and possibly lead) various regional CARA roundtable sessions over the years.
